REVIEW
Utilizing the COD 4: Modern Warfare engine, COD: World At Warthrows out the rulebook of war to transform World War II combat through a new enemy, new tracks and an uncensored experience of the dramatic battles that gripped a generation. As U.S marines and Russian soldiers, players employ new features like cooperative gameplay, and weapons such as flamethrower in the most chaotic and dramatically intense experience to date. COD: World At War introduces cooperative play, bringing fresh meaning to the No One Fights Alone, lines with up to four players online for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC, or two player local split screen on consoles. Nintendo Wii will also supports a cooperative mode for two players. For the first time ever players can experience harrowing single player missions together for greater camaraderie and tactical execution. The cooperative campaign allows players to rank up and unlock perks in competitive multiplayer by completing challenges and earning experiences points, adding continuous re playability and team based gameplay. While playing competitively or cooperatively, if players are online with COD: World At War, then always gain experience points. Based on the player's experience rank and rank of the player's friends. COD: World At Warscales dynamically to provide a deeper level challenge.
In COD: World At War there are plenty of deafening, large scale set piece battles, but there is also variation to change things up. Case in point is the PBY mission, where you man the guns on a Navy aircraft. At first glance, this seems to be a mirror to the Spectre Gunship mission in Modern Warfare, in both missions you rain fire down from above. But the Spectre Gunship mission has a cold detachment to it, those tiny blips on the screen that are humans die from a enemy that they cannot see and fight back against. In World At War's PBY mission, you are in the midst of a raging air and sea battle, taking damage and fighting for your life or there is a sniper mission to whack a German General that does not quite have the cat and mouse feeling of Modern Warfare's sniper level.
The campaign does suffer a bit due to its broad scope, the narrative skips over months at a time, showcasing the major battles of the war. The result is that the sense of the story does not seem as strong as it did in Modern Warfare. It perhaps does not help that we all know how the war eventually turned out, Modern Warfare had the advantage of a fictionalized story with plenty of shocking twists and turns.

World at War is a game in the Call of Duty series, and features a more mature theme than its previous installments. The game is also open-ended, giving the player multiple ways to complete objectives. The gameplay of World at War shares several features with previous iterations of the franchise. Players fight alongside AI-controlled teammates. They help during the game's missions by providing cover fire, shooting down enemies, and clearing rooms for entry.
When playing the Wii version of the game, instead of using a normal controller, such as the ones used by the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, an optional gun-like expansion controller known as the Wii Zapper can be used. The Zapper, or Wii Remote and Nunchuk, can be used to aim at targets to fire at them and simulate marksmanship.
The game's return to World War II-era warfare reintroduces weapons and technology that have been seen in other games in the Call of Duty franchise, including the Thompson submachine gun, the M1 Garand Rifle, the Mosin–Nagant rifle, and the Panzerschreck anti-tank rocket launcher. The player gains access to these over the course of the game, but may only carry up to two weapons in addition to hand grenades. Weapons and ammo from fallen foes or friendlies can be picked up to replace weapons in a player's arsenal. Players can also find weapons with additional attachments, including guns equipped with rifle grenades, telescopic sights, and bayonets.
A character can be positioned in one of three stances: standing, crouching, or prone; each affecting the character's rate of movement, accuracy, and stealth. Using cover helps the player avoid enemy fire or recover health after taking significant damage, as there are no armor or health powerups. When the character has taken damage, the edges of the screen glow red and the character's heartbeat increases. If the character stays out of fire, the character can recover. When the character is within the blast radius of a live grenade, a marker indicates the direction of the grenade, helping the player in deciding whether to flee or throw it back at the enemy.
The single player campaign includes thirteen hidden "death cards", denoted by playing cards attached to makeshift war graves. There is one in each level (barring those that take place in vehicles); collecting them unlocks cheats for Co-op mode, such as reduced enemy endurance and "paintball mode".
